Happy new 2015 !

Good day dear readers and blog followers!

Feliz Ano Nuevo !

С Новым Годом !

Happy New Year !

I wish a great, happy and prosperous new year to all of you, full of love, health, success and happiness !
I hope that during this new year you will get to know plenty of great music only of the highest quality, and maybe even dance some Cuban dance to its sounds;
I will try and do my best to keep introducing interesting music, so keep following on a weekly basis 🙂

So, for today we have a nice little new year’s Reggaeton with with elements of Conga by Arnaldo y Su Talisman.

Disfruten, have fun !

26.12.14 : Sur Caribe – Fiesta y Resumen

Good day dear readers!

Today I wish to present you a very nice song by Sur Caribe from Santiago De Cuba, from the album “25 veces fiesta”, which came out at 2013, celebrating the 25th (!) anniversary of the band.

That’s right – like many other bands in Cuba, Sur Caribe only came to international acclaim during the last decade, but was active in Cuba since the late 1980’s !

So, I encourage you to ask the DJ at your local salsa venue to play this song, thus making it a real Cuban party, so you can have fun, just like in Cuba…

19.12.14 : Paulito FG live – The legendary Noche De Cristal concert !

Good day dear readers!

Today I wish to share with you one of the best concert of Paulito FG I’m familiar with, the 1998 “Noche De Cristal” concert!

Recorded during the golden age of Timba music, this concert became the stuff of legends… at that time the band had some legendary personal like Alexander Abreu, and some who would be members of Isaac Delgado’s group in a short while… Isaac himself was in the crowd, by the way 🙂

12.12.14 : Manolin – Ya Se Que Sabes De Mi

Good day dear readers !

Today I wish to present you a favorite tune of mine by Manolin, also known as “el medico de la salsa”.

As I wrote before, since leaving Cuba and moving to Miami, Manolin has almost completely abandoned Timba in favour of commercialized, western music.

But this was not the case 100% of the time, and although no Timba albums were released for many years, a few of his “old style” tracks have been released here and there, just like this song from around 2007 (another wonderful example is “Me Falta Habana“, from around the same time; In this song Manolin tells about how much he misses his homeland and would like to get back, but he cannot…)  .

This song is just like his good old work – wonderful, sophisticated, hard hitting yet very suave Timba music of the highest quality.

Recently Manolin has been visiting Cuba, so, hopefully, we will see the comeback of the good master Timbero Manolin in our lifetimes!

As for now, I leave you with this great track; Disfruten !

05.12.14 : Manolito y Su Trabuco – Te Quise De Mas

Good evening dear readers!

Many people think that Timba is “fast and furious” with fast tempos, harsh lyrics and hard hitting guias.

This might be true in some cases, but Timba is a much much (much!!!) wider universe.

So, today I wish to introduce a nice romantic composition by Manolito y Su Trabuco called “Te Quise De Mas”, from the 1996 album “contra todos los pronosticos”.

I like it as it if very suave but still has a great groove.

28.11.14 : Pedrito Martinez Group live in New York !

Good afternoon dear readers!

Modern life can at times be stressful, so on the weekend one should relax, at least a little bit 🙂

So today I’m glad to provide a tune just for such a case, at least during the 1st part of it…

The Pedrito Martinez group performed not in a concert hall or theater stage, but rather at a park in their “home town” of New York, USA, during one weekend, and this was filmed and uploaded to youtube.

Here are the results, one of them is this wonderful, tranquil yet interesting track, “Kilometro”, which is full of great playing, intriguing solos and hefty improvisation.

And all of this, in a park 🙂

21.11.14 : Dan Den – Torbellino De Amor

Good afternoon dear readers!

Last time we started a romantic relationship with Orquesta Reve.
So today, we’ll take a look at what happens a while later – Torbeliino De Amor, a whirlwind of love, a storm of emotions, a hurricane of passion!

This wonderful romantic salsa is from Dan Den‘s 1st album, “Siempre hay un ojo que te ve”, which came out in 1990.
During that time and for a few year later on, Dan Den created quite a few wonderful and romantic compositions such as “Corazon De Leon” and “Amame Con Su Experiencia”, but this was their entry note into this field.

Below is this song performed live, but later in this page you can find the studio version and a renewed studio version with a new, female, lead vocalist !

14.11.14 : Orquesta Reve – Mas Viejo Que Ayer, Mas Joven Que Manana

Good afternoon dear readers!

Do you remember your first date with a beloved one?
The excitement, the anticipation, the preparations, wanting to present your best… Then, you hear that bell ringing, and your heard beats so strong a fast that it feels like it’s going to pop out of your chest and fly to cloud 9 !

That, with some typically Cuban twists, is the story told in the following wonderful composition by Orquesta Reve, from their 1988 album, “Que Cuento Es Ese?”; The song was composed and arranged by the genius Juan Carlos Alfonso, who after this album will retire from the Orquesta to form his own amazing band – Dan Den, which will later make a cover version of their own for this song.
Alfonso’s guiding hand can be heard right since the beginning, as the song starts with an interesting piano intro.

This album is one of 3, together with “Rumberos Latino-Americanos” and “La Explosion del Momento” which came out during 3 consecutive years (1986-1988), and helped bring back Reve to the primera linea of Cuban bands after a relative quiet period during the 1970’s.

I highly recommend reading the fascinating article on Juan Carlos Alfonso during his time with Orquesta Reve, written by Kevin Moore of Timba.com ; It would be great accompaniment for the song, which you can hear right now here 🙂

07.11.14 : El Nino y La Verdad – La Verdad

Good day dear readers!

Today I wish yo present a new orchestra made of some old and some new talents; El Nino y La Verdad.

The band was formed in 2013 by Emilio Frias “el nino del charangon”, once the youngest lead singer of Orquesta Reve together with “Pachi Jr”, son of legendary compositor and band leader Wilfredo “el Pachi” Naranjo, and were soon joined by another Reve member, Pascual Matos, and ex Manolito y Su Trabuco bassist, Roberto “Chino” Vazquez.

The band quickly became quite popular due to the strong lineup and interesting compositions, ranging from Son to Mozambique to Abakua and Orisha chants all mixed together into marvelous and hard hitting Timba.

Be sure to catch them at the Friday matinee at the casa de la musica in Miramar if you are in Habana!
