{"id":933,"date":"2018-02-09T12:02:18","date_gmt":"2018-02-09T12:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/salsalust.com\/blogs\/cuban_music_che\/?p=933"},"modified":"2018-02-09T12:15:36","modified_gmt":"2018-02-09T12:15:36","slug":"09-02-18-guararey-de-pastora-from-changui-classic-to-world-fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salsayo.com\/blogs\/cuban_music_che\/?p=933","title":{"rendered":"09.02.18 : Guararey de Pastora&#8230; from Changui classic to world fame !"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Good day dear readers, listeners and blog followers!<\/p>\n<p>Today we shall look into a nice little composition called &#8220;Guararey de Pastora&#8221;, also well known simply as &#8220;Guarare&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does it mean?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/i0.kym-cdn.com\/photos\/images\/original\/001\/287\/555\/106.jpg\" width=\"880\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Cuba Guarare means to have an informal, secretive, relationship with someone, mostly outside of your &#8220;official&#8221; one, or at least wanting to have one with somebody specific.<br \/>\nOutside Cuba it can also mean &#8220;to have a beef with \\ to be annoyed by somebody&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This song, with its typical &#8220;doble jugada&#8221;, is a classic Changui composition, common to the musical groups of Guantanamo and other parts of Oriente in Cuba.<\/p>\n<p>A typical traditional interpretation of the song would sound something like this:<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z5711L8JKDY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The song was picked up by <a href=\"http:\/\/salsalust.com\/blogs\/cuban_music_che\/?p=699\">Los Van Vans&#8217;<\/a> Juan Formell during the early 1970s, when the group was touring Cuba, and performed in Guantanamo.<br \/>\nFormell once told in an interview that a band which was them on stage one day with Van Van played this song.<br \/>\nFormell liked it, and later on recreated it from memory, recording a Songo version on his 1974 album.<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cVsXxQbtGbk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Despide the american blockade of Cuba at its peak during those years, the record somehow made it to the USA, and less than 2 years later, New York salsa musician Ray Barreto released a version of his own on his album &#8220;barreto&#8221;, released in 1975.<br \/>\nThis version is the one most fans of Latin music outside Cuba are familiar with&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QLmdVU8xA9I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So, here you go&#8230; an interesting story about how a classic of an old genre gains world fame!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Good day dear readers, listeners and blog followers!
